Recently, I had the pleasure of driving Susan and her daughters, Stephanie and Victoria, from Buffalo, New York, on a very special genealogy tour through the heart of Sicily.
Their goal wasn't simply to visit another beautiful Sicilian town—it was to walk the same streets where Susan's grandparents had lived before leaving their homeland to build a new life in America.
A Small Sicilian Village with a Big History
Our destination was Montedoro, a quiet village in the province of Caltanissetta that today is home to around 1,400 residents. As soon as we got there we had the feeling of what this little place used to be...
Like many towns in inland Sicily, Montedoro experienced significant emigration during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Thousands of local families left in search of better opportunities abroad, and many eventually settled in Buffalo, New York.
As Susan would later confirm, Buffalo still has a large community of families whose roots trace back to Montedoro.
Searching Through the Historical Archives
Our first stop was the Town Hall, where we met Zaccaria, a municipal employee whose knowledge of the historical archives proved invaluable.
Together, we began searching through old records to uncover information about Susan's grandparents.
After carefully reviewing the archives, Zaccaria found something extraordinary: the original marriage certificate of Susan's grandparents.
Holding a document that had remained preserved for generations was an emotional moment for Susan and her daughters. It transformed family stories passed down over the years into tangible history.
Even more exciting, the research also revealed the exact homes where Susan's grandparents had lived before they married and emigrated to Buffalo.
Standing in front of those houses gave the family an opportunity that very few people ever experience—the chance to see the places where their ancestors began their lives in Sicily before embarking on the journey that would eventually lead to America.
An Unexpected Meeting with the Mayor
Sometimes the most memorable moments are the ones you never plan.
While we were exploring the village, we happened to meet the Mayor of Montedoro.
After learning why Susan and her daughters had come to visit, he warmly welcomed us and shared an interesting piece of local history.
He explained that Montedoro has maintained a strong connection with Buffalo for generations because so many residents emigrated there during the last century.
Susan smiled as she confirmed his words, explaining that Buffalo is still home to a vibrant Montedoro community where many families proudly preserve their Sicilian heritage.
It was a wonderful reminder that even after generations and thousands of miles, the bond between these two communities remains alive.
A Panoramic View of Montedoro
Before leaving, the Mayor suggested one more stop: the astronomical observatory located at the highest point of the village.
The panoramic view offered a completely different perspective of Montedoro.
Looking across the rolling Sicilian countryside, it was easy to imagine what life must have been like for the generations who once called this village home.
Lunch in the Heart of the Village
After a morning filled with discoveries, we enjoyed lunch at the village's only restaurant.
It was the perfect opportunity to relax, share stories, and reflect on everything we had discovered together.
These quiet moments often become just as meaningful as the research itself, allowing families to truly absorb the emotions of reconnecting with their heritage.
Ending the Day at the Valley of the Temples
Our journey continued to Agrigento, where Susan, Stephanie, and Victoria visited the magnificent Valley of the Temples.
After spending the afternoon exploring one of Sicily's most iconic archaeological sites, we returned to Catania, bringing to a close a day filled with history, discovery, and unforgettable memories.
More Than a Tour
